Vintage Scandinavian design is known for its ability to balance simplicity with character. This handcrafted glass figurine, shaped like a stylized angel is a clear example. Made from a combination of clear and opaline glass, its clean lines and thoughtful details reflect the essentials of Nordic design.
Handcrafted in the Åland Islands
This piece was created by Jussi Keramik, a small workshop founded by Finnish ceramicist Jussi Mäkalä. In 1977, Mäkalä moved to Mariehamn, the capital of the Åland Islands — a self-governing, Swedish-speaking region of Finland. Relocating to Åland was a challenge. As Jussi later noted, “being Finnish on Åland back then wasn’t simple.” Still, he brought his skills in ceramics and glasswork to the local community and established a small studio known for minimalist, handcrafted pieces with a distinct Nordic feel.

A Rare and Collectible Legacy
Although the workshop closed many years ago, items signed Jussi Keramik remain highly sought after. They are considered rare examples of artisan work from a unique moment in Nordic design history.
A Note for Collectors
This particular figurine has a small chip on one of the wings, visible in the photos. While minor, it’s important to note. The piece remains structurally sound and visually appealing. Whether you collect Scandinavian design or simply appreciate well-made vintage pieces, this figurine is a meaningful addition to any collection.
